On the rise: the Atlanta Gladiators' 2025-26 season sets the stage for developing talent and competing for meaningful games beyond the month of April

The ECHL season is a long one. The regular season (72 games) starts in mid-October and for most teams, concludes in mid-April.
For 16 teams (4 from each division), their season continues into post-season play for the ECHL Championship, the Kelly Cup. And while the Atlanta Gladiators' season concluded on May 4th with a series-ending 3-1 loss in Game 6 of their 1st round playoff series against the South Carolina Stingrays (a 4-2 series loss), while ending sooner than planned, they surely arrived sooner than planned, as this marks the first post-season appearance for the team in the last 4 seasons (click HERE for our playoff preview)
Before looking at a few key games per month of the regular and post-season, simply start with the data which shows improved fan engagement across the board (per the data compiled by the team):
The increased fan engagement and related numbers can be attributed to one key theme, and that is the team's play on the ice and the culture shift/related change in mindset.
With a 1st year head coach in Matt Ginn and 11 rookies (among other roster moves), here's a few improvements with their on-ice performance:
The team's identity is clearly forged by their defense. The Glads finish 5th overall in scoring defense (allowing 2.54 goals per game) and when it comes to their goaltending, both goalies (1st Team All-Rookie T.J. Semptimphelter and Ethan Haider) finish in the top 13 among all goaltenders in goals allowed average.
Improvements on offense result in 3 players scoring 50 or more points, including ECHL All-Star Jack O'Brien and ECHL 1st Team All-Defenseman Chad Nychuk.
A 31-5-1-1 record when scoring the first goal of the game.
Being only one of 10 teams to have 90 or more points (Atlanta has the 8th best record in the league with 93 points).
And in looking back, here are a few games that come to mind (including a shot for the ages) that are pivotal in the team's success and return to the playoffs:
October 17, 2025: For opening night, the Glads win in a gritty manner with a 3-2 overtime win over the Utah Grizzlies (click HERE for the article/recap).
November 1, 2025: In the midst of opening the season with 6 consecutive wins, a key win is their 4-2 victory over their in-state rival and ECHL South Division foe, the Savannah Ghost Pirates, as the Glads score 2 shorthanded goals to give them the win (click HERE for the article/recap).
December 21, 2025: The Glads sweep a 3-and-3 (3 games over 3 consecutive days) with a 3-1 win over the Greenville Swamp Rabbits in one of a number of closely played matchups between the ECHL South Division rivals (click HERE for the article/recap).
January 19, 2026: On Sensory Friendly Game Day (lower volume, no goal horn, dimmed lights, and quiet zones for a calmer and more inclusive game experience), the Glads come away with a 2-1 win over Greenville and take 2 of the 3 games in their mini-series (click HERE for the article/recap).
February 4, 2026: With a 3-1 win over the Florida Everblades, the Glads move into 1st place in the ECHL South Division, which is arguably the most competitive division in the league (click HERE for the article/recap).
March 27, 2026: To kick off Hockey Heritage Weekend, Atlanta breaks out the Atlanta Knights jerseys and tells the Orlando Solar Bears "Knight Night" with a 3-1 win (click HERE for the article/recap).
April 28, 2026: Simply, the shot that almost was; if not for an offsides, a miracle shot from center ice would have put Game 4 of their playoff series into overtime. The team ends up winning in double-overtime to return the series to Atlanta for Game 6, but still, this one makes you wonder (click HERE for the article/recap).
There are other memorable games, including the Teddy Bear Toss (and the more than 11k stuffed animals collected) and others, but the games mentioned are ones which are reflective of the new culture being built at this level and with this team. The focus is always on player development, but there's a way to do so and field a team that can compete for the post-season.
During the offseason, there likely will be the usual personnel decisions to make. Ranging from the retirement of team captain Cody Sylvester to players getting promoted or latching onto other teams (via trade or free agency) along with looking at players whose style of play aligns with the approach synonymous with the team, there truly is something brewing at the Gas South District and in the ECHL South.
The Atlanta Gladiators clearly are a team on the rise.
