Since its inception in 2015, the upcoming #AlphaDerbyWeekend, the Kentucky Derby themed event presented by the Alphas of Atlanta, is a staple event in Atlanta as it garners local, regional, national, and even international acclaim. What starts as a 2-day event (2015) evolves into a 3-day weekend series (2017), providing patrons with a top-notch experience complete with networking and a mature environment to have an amazing experience, all to support some tremendous community causes.

Under the leadership of co-chairs Robert Cunningham and Michael Jones, along with a committee who brings a wealth of leadership experience (ranging from serving as presidents of their graduate chapters, alumni associations, professional associations, and civic entities), the 501c3 (nonprofit) is comprised of members from the Metro-Atlanta graduate chapters (of the fraternity). With this being their signature event, it is open to the public and previously draws A-listers including (but not limited to) the Mayor of Atlanta (Andre Dickens), Atlanta City Council members (including Byron Amos), and other dignitaries; for this year, Honorary chairs Jay Bailey (CEO/Founder of the Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurship), Lee May (Senior Pastor of Transforming Faith Center), and Tharon Johnson (CEO/Founder of Paramount Consulting Group) are among the dignitaries scheduled to make an appearance during the weekend festivities.

Anheuser-Busch, Hideoki, Woodford Reserve, and Audi of Marietta serve as this year's title/lead sponsors along with others across the business community and beyond. As for this year's edition taking place the first weekend of May, the events which are open to the public are as follows (primarily May 2-4, 2025):

  • May 2nd: On Friday morning, the highly popular golf tournament, which takes place at Chapel Hills Golf Club in Douglasville, GA, gets everything underway. The event draws men's and women's teams in full force (as at least 1/3 of the teams are comprised of women), helping set the tone for a good event and Weekend. As of April 23rd, all team and playing slots are sold out.

  • May 2nd: The highly anticipated kickoff party sets the stage for the evening as "grown and fly" atmosphere to simply have an enjoyable outing at the Delta Flight Museum. The DJ Wright Band provides the live music and DJ Tron, one of Atlanta's top DJ's, provides the evening soundtrack. As an added feature, the one and only line-dance king, Cupid, brings his energy and more (the artist behind the "Cupid Shuffle" and "Flex") with a live performance (limited tickets are available).

  • May 3rd: The main event/watch party returns to the Delta Flight Museum, providing an indoor/outdoor experience for all. The sounds of DJ Genius, DJ E-Clazz, and DJ Greg Nyce provide the Saturday soundtrack, and with activities ranging from the famous Hat Contest, engagement with multiple brand partners, and the high-brow setting given the attire and more, it's an ideal way to spend the day as the actual race is shown live (there are limited tickets available for this event).

  • May 4th: The weekend concludes with the popular R&B Brunch and Day Party at the host hotel, the Omni Atlanta. As a way to provide a proper and positive sendoff to all attendees, a top-notch brunch experience is provided. In addition to the famous "bottomless mimosas" for the 21 and older audience, open bar is included with the ticket purchase (there are limited tickets available for this event).

Proceeds from the event support the foundation's mini-grant program, as they provide opportunities for community-based organizations whose efforts include (but are not limited to) scholarship programs, male-mentoring, co-ed leadership development, and other education/community centered endeavors.

To date, WSB Radio (via Shelley Wynter), LUL Magazine, Black Golf TV, PGL Sports, AJ3 Report, JazzyB4Real, and Voyage-Atlanta are among the platforms taking note of the event. On Sunday, April 27th (12-12:30pm), the event is one of the featured stories on Focus Atlanta hosted by Keisha Lancelin (on the CW-Atlanta).

As noted, there are limited tickets available along with branding/sponsorship opportunities available for the event (click HERE for details), along with travel information (click HERE for details).

10 years of providing an unparalleled experience is a signature of the Alphas of Atlanta. However, the focus on giving back to communities across the city and greater Metro-Atlanta area is what makes the event a truly special one.

And as they say, there's no place like being in the Winner's Circle for the first weekend of May via the #AlphaDerbyWeekend.
