The Redbirds' pitching stifles the Stripers: Memphis' pitching holds Gwinnett to 2 hits and wins 4-1 to even the series at 2

Preview: Memphis Redbirds (8-10, 3.5 GB in the International League West) vs Gwinnett Stripers (9-9, 2.5 GB in the International League West)

After winning the first 2 games in the current series, Gwinnett drops a close matchup in last night's game (3-1).

Looking to prevent the Memphis Redbirds (the AAA affilate of the St Louis Cardinals) from evening the series (April 19, 2024 with a 7:05pm first pitch at CoolRay Field), the Stripers' (the AAA affiliate of the Atlanta Braves) Zach Logue (tonight's starting pitcher) looks to continue his solid start to the season in his 2nd start of the year (0-0 with a 0.00 ERA in the early part of the season). On offense, Leury Garcia (.355 batting average with 10 runs batted in [RBI]) and JP Martinez (.305 batting average and a team leading 7 stolen bases) look to make things challenging for Memphis starter Sam Robberse (2-0 with a 2.45 ERA).

As they look to even the series (which concludes on April 21, 2024), Jose Fermin (.383 batting average with 2 homeruns [HR}, 8 RBI's, and 5 stolen bases) along with Cesar Prieto (.318 batting average with 4 HR and 11 RBI's) look to lead the way on offense.

Game highlights: The Redbirds' pitching silences the Stripers' offense and results in a 4-1 win to even the series

The Redbirds' Jose Fermin gives the team an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st thanks to his leadoff (solo) homerun. After a few innings of both teams taking advantage of the challenge system for balls and strikes, Memphis would strike in the 4th through 6th innings.

Cesar Prieto's RBI double in the top of the 4th gives the Redbirds a 2-0 lead. In the top of the 5th, Alfonso Rivas III's RBI single extends the lead to 3-0.

In the top of the 6th inning, Thomas Saggese's 2nd homer of the season adds to the Redbirds' lead (4-0).

Gwinnett would get in the scoring column in the bottom of the 7th inning. Alejo Lopez' RBI groundout makes it a 4-1 game.

The Redbirds' would close out the game and win by a 4-1 margin as winning pitcher Sam Robberse (he improves to 3-0 on the season) goes 8 dominant innings, allowing 1 run (unearned) on 1 hit (he adds 9 strikeouts and 2 walks). On offense, Jose Fermin (2 for 4 with 1 HR and 1 RBI), Alfonso Rivas III (2 for 4 with a RBI) and Thomas Saggese (1 for 4 with a HR and 1 RBI) lead the way.

Gwinnett's Zach Logue drops to 0-1 on the season (4 IP, allowing 2 runs [earned} on 6 hits with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks). On offense, only Forrest Wall (1 for 3) and Andrew Velazquez (1 for 3) generate any offense for the Stripers.
